Financial health! Is that a thing??

Financial health? What is that?? Well mostly it comes in the form of peace. Finances are something that can cause a lot of stress. For those of us who get anxious about thing super easily (I am one of those people) money can cause a lot of stress. I have never liked the idea of credit cards because knowing myself I would forget to pay it off and then that would give me way too much stress. So I never got one. But I did take out student loans.

So here is really exciting news!! We have almost paid off my student loans!! We have been working on paying them off for almost a year now. I took out the loans my last year of college to make it easier on my parents who were trying to pay for college for 3 different kids. So I took them out and figured I would get a good job after I graduated and I would be able to pay them off. Well shortly before I graduated I became pregnant and knew that I wouldn't be able to work full time and afford child care. So once our son was born then I was able to stay home with him. I would make the same choice again no matter what, but it did put paying off my loans until my husband graduated.

After he finished his classes we moved to TN for him to do his internship to finish his bachelors degree. Now some of you may know that TN is also known as Dave Ramsey country. He is a financial guru! He helps you get out of debt and work on saving money. His motto is "Live like no one else so that later you can live and give like no one else." I had read his book "The Total Money Makeover" and loved it. My husband was not as anxious to get rid of hi credit card but we did it. We cut it up and have never looked back. We completed baby step one while he was still in school. We used cash on things like groceries, and our fun money. But gas we used our debit cards. Just for convenience.

We started with debt that measured just under $8,000 which did seem like a lot but it seemed manageable. We decided we wanted to pay it off as soon as possible so that its not just there hanging over our heads! We started paying on it last April. We got a decent tax return and so we decided to pay off one of the loans with it. We didn't pick the smallest one like is talked about in baby step 2 but slowly we were able to get the smallest one paid off. We are not working on the biggest one and yes it takes a lot of patience and determination. There are some months we don't get to pay as much as we would like but there are other times where we can pay more! So as of right now we have less than $2,000 to pay off!!

Its been a long time coming but we have a ton of people who are cheering us on! Two of my sister in laws are also working on paying off their debts and my parents are also supporting us! We are hoping to have it completely paid off in just a couple months!! We are so excited to finally achieve this goal that we have set. We have not had one fight about money. We can talk about money without feeling anxious or stressed. Its such a nice feeling. I know many people can't talk to their spouse about money because it ends in a fight.
