So I planned on blogging all last week due to my new goals. But like always there are bumps in the road to try and stop those goals from happening. It was a good week but with different challenges that I wasn't expecting.
So we have a 20 month old and he is hard to keep up with by himself but this week we had 5 kids ages 7, 5, 3, and 1 plus mine. So I had a responsibility that I wasn't used to and that was getting 2 kids ready for school with hair, food, backpacks, and on time for the bus. I am not a morning person so mornings are hard for me anyways. So getting up early to get kids on the bus was new. These kids are hilarious though! The oldest would decide at 4:45 am that he was ready to get dressed for the day. That would wake up the other one who wasn't ready to wake up for the day. I had to convince the oldest to lay back down until 6! So funny!
SO during the day I had the three babies who would just run around all day and wanted to eat everything they saw! They were tough to keep up with. I am 16 weeks pregnant so that is a drain on your body anyways and then running around with multiple kids during the day is very different day than I am used to! They all napped at different times of the day as well. There was one day that I got an hour where the three babies were asleep all at the same time and the older ones weren't home from school yet. That was an amazing hour!
The parents of the kids were awesome and pre-cooked meals for us and made sure there was frozen pizza so that we didn't have the responsibility and pressure to cook or figure out what the kids like and are used to. That was great but it wasn't the food that I was used to.
Since coming to live with my parents while my husband is in school, we have stopped eating like college kids. We eat brown rice, quinoa, grilled chicken, pork chops, kale salads, roasted veggies, and all other healthy foods. Our bodies have totally adapted to this low fat, whole grains diet. Now we still go out to eat and I get Chick-Fil-A fried chicken, mac and cheese from Panera Bread, fried shrimp and french fries from Cracker Barrel, but its amazing how when your body gets used to a certain way of eating that when it gets thrown off your body almost seems to go into shock.
My mom was awesome and I tried to make fries from a potato. Which I have done many times, but that day was just not my day. I sliced my finger while cutting the potato. Then I didn't spray the pan enough so the fries stuck to the pan and crumbled because I couldn't scrap them off. So I just had to throw them away but I really wanted fries so my mom brought my Chick-Fil-A for lunch! She is awesome!
I wasn't sleeping well due to my anxiety about knowing that a baby would wake up at some point during the night so my mind had a hard time shutting down completely. But okay I might get a little TMI here but my digestive system was way thrown off! My body was craving a salad and veggies. I love pasta and burritos and pizza but there is something about a nice salad with tons of veggies and Italian dressing that my body was craving. My system was not regular and I know that if I just had a salad or something it would even out.
Now coming back to eating my mom's low fat, whole grains diet it only has taken a few days for my system to even out. Food fuels our bodies and its amazing how making sure you have a good balance of different types of foods is so important! I don't try to cut out sugars or carbs or absolutely no fats, but I try to balance everything. I try to not have a bunch of sugar at once. I do eat ice cream and candy especially during football season when we have touch down chocolate, and we love cookies in this house! But we balance it out with fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
When we decide that food isn't the enemy but that it is our friend we can finally really enjoy the food we need for our bodies to work. We also don't have to feel like we are always eating cardboard! There is a joke in my house because my mom is the one who really prefers brown rice instead of white rice that when her and my dad go out of town then I am in charge of cooking for the people still here and we make sure to tell my mom that we had white rice instead of brown that we are getting the good stuff. The "unhealthy" stuff. But I have learned to enjoy a wide variety of food and different flavors and I actually look forward to a new recipe and new foods!
I try not to judge a food based on how it looks or what the name is. Make it a goal to try a new food that you have been scared or hesitant to try!

This was a hair style my mom did on me when I was little and I tried to recreate it! I think I did pretty good. Its called a spider web. She thought it was awesome!
